How much bacteriostatic water for retatrutide?

Any volume works, because the bacteriostatic water only sets the concentration — it does not change how much peptide is in the vial. Adding 1 mL to a 10 mg vial gives 10 mg/mL, so a 2 mg dose measures 20 units on a 100-unit insulin syringe. Adding 2 mL gives 5 mg/mL and the same 2 mg becomes 40 units.

Why there is no single correct volume

Reconstitution is arithmetic, not a protocol. The vial contains a fixed mass of lyophilized peptide; the water is a solvent that determines how concentrated the resulting solution is. More water means a lower concentration and more syringe units for the same milligram amount — the amount of peptide drawn is identical either way. What a volume changes is how easy the measurement is to read on the syringe barrel.

The practical constraint is the syringe. A standard 100-unit insulin syringe holds 1 mL, so any combination that pushes a single measurement past 100 units means drawing twice. Choosing a concentration that lands the intended measurement comfortably inside one barrel is the only thing the volume decision is optimizing.

Bacteriostatic versus sterile water

Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth and allows a reconstituted vial to be entered more than once. Sterile water contains no preservative: it is single-use, because every needle entry after the first risks introducing organisms into a medium that will not suppress them. For a vial measured out across multiple occasions, the preservative is the entire distinction.

Mechanics

  • Swab both rubber stoppers with alcohol and let them dry — wiping while wet moves contaminants rather than killing them.
  • Aim the water down the inside wall of the glass, not directly onto the powder. A stream striking lyophilized peptide directly can denature it.
  • Swirl gently until dissolved. Do not shake: peptides are sensitive to the shear forces agitation creates.
  • A clear solution is expected. Visible particulates or cloudiness after full dissolution indicate the vial should not be used.
  • Refrigerate after reconstitution. The lyophilized powder is comparatively stable, but the solution is not.

Storage after reconstitution

Reconstituted peptide is stored refrigerated at 2-8 degrees Celsius and protected from light.
