Standalone vs caffeine-combination effect-size gap. The caffeine-combination evidence is consistently strong; standalone L-theanine effect sizes are modest. Whether L-theanine standalone produces meaningful clinical effects for general cognitive enhancement in non-anxious healthy adults is mechanistically reasonable but less directly demonstrated. For users not pairing with caffeine, expect subtle effects.

Long-term high-dose safety. Trial data extends to a few weeks at 200–400 mg/day. Multi-year continuous high-dose use is not directly RCT-characterized — though the safety profile of moderate dosing is among the cleanest in supplements, and traditional tea consumption provides extensive culinary safety precedent at lower doses.

ADHD and clinical attention disorders. Small trials in adolescent ADHD suggest cognitive benefit, particularly in combination with caffeine. Effect sizes are smaller than for established ADHD medications. Not a substitute; potentially useful as adjunct.

Does L-theanine have any interactions with medications?
