What are research peptides?
FAQA peptide is a short chain of amino acids — longer than a single amino acid, shorter than a protein, with the boundary drawn loosely around fifty residues. “Research peptide” is not a chemical category at all: it describes how the material is sold, labelled for laboratory use rather than approved for people.
The chemistry, briefly
Amino acids joined by peptide bonds form a chain. Two make a dipeptide, a handful an oligopeptide, and somewhere past roughly fifty the word becomes protein — a convention rather than a hard line. Length matters practically: short chains are digested in the gut, which is why most are studied by injection, and they clear quickly, which is why dosing intervals differ so widely between compounds.
Sequence determines everything else. BPC-157 is fifteen amino acids; semaglutide is a modified GLP-1 analogue engineered for a week-long half-life. Both are peptides. Almost nothing else about them is comparable, which is why this site keeps a page per compound rather than a page about peptides.
“Research peptide” describes a channel, not a molecule
The phrase is commercial. It marks material sold labelled for laboratory use — not evaluated, not approved, and not manufactured to pharmaceutical standards by default. The same molecule can exist in both worlds: semaglutide is an approved medicine under brand names and is also sold as research-grade powder. The chemistry does not change across that line; the regulatory status, the quality assurance and the legal position all do.
That is why purity documentation carries the weight it does here. With no approval process standing behind a vial, third-party certificates are the only evidence of what is in it.

Approved, investigational, or neither
- Approved — a regulator has reviewed the evidence and cleared a specific product for a specific use. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are here.

- Neither — studied to varying depths, sometimes for decades, but never taken through a completed approval process. Most of the compounds people mean by “research peptide” sit here.
The third group is the widest and the most uneven. Some have substantial animal literature and no human trials; others have early human data that stopped. What they share is the absence of a regulator's verdict, which is a different thing from a negative one.
