What are the side effects of peptides?
FAQFor most research peptides, no human trial has characterised a side-effect profile at all — so the honest general answer is that it is largely unknown. Where effects are documented, they are compound-specific: the incretin drugs carry trial-scale safety data, and most other compounds carry almost none.
Why the general answer is an absence
Side-effect profiles come from systematic collection during controlled trials. Compounds that never completed that process have no such dataset, and what circulates instead is self-report — uncontrolled, unblinded, and structurally unable to detect anything rare, delayed, or silent. Absence of reported effects in that setting is not evidence of safety; it is mostly evidence that nobody was measuring.
Preclinical work has the opposite limitation. Animal safety data can be extensive and still not transfer, because dose scaling, metabolism and exposure duration all differ.
Where real data exists
The incretin class is the exception. Gastrointestinal effects — nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation — are the most frequently reported in those trials, generally most pronounced during dose escalation. Those profiles come from thousands of participants under observation, which is a categorically different evidential basis from the rest of this field.
Injection-site reactions are the one thread running across almost everything administered subcutaneously: localised redness, irritation or swelling, independent of what is in the syringe.
The questions the literature has not closed
Some compounds raise theoretical concerns their evidence base cannot resolve — growth-signalling pathways and angiogenic mechanisms both prompt long-term questions that short studies were never designed to answer. Those pages say the question is open rather than answering it in either direction, because an unresolved question reported as resolved is the more damaging error.
Purity is a separate hazard from pharmacology. With no approval process standing behind a vial, contamination and mislabelling are failure modes that have nothing to do with the molecule itself.
