Chamomile extract has shown anxiolytic effects in RCTs in adults with generalized anxiety disorder; apigenin is the principal active flavonoid in chamomile, so the effect likely operates through apigenin's GABA-A partial agonism. Effect sizes are modest — not benzodiazepine-class — but real. Standalone apigenin extracts at 50 mg may produce similar anxiolytic effects via the same mechanism, though direct standalone-apigenin anxiety trials are limited. For mild-to-moderate anxiety: reasonable adjunct. For severe clinical anxiety: not a substitute for established treatment.

The Mao 2016 trial is the cleanest human RCT evidence for chamomile-apigenin in anxiety — though it studies chamomile extract rather than pure standalone apigenin.

The Tarragó 2018 paper is the foundational mechanism reference for apigenin's NAD+ preservation effect.
