Is BPC-157 legal?
BPC-157 is not FDA-approved. FDA barred compounding pharmacies from preparing it in 2023; in July 2026 its advisory committee voted 8 to 6 to recommend adding it to the 503A Bulks List, and HHS has published a draft policy that it does not intend to act against pharmacies compounding it. WADA bans it in sport.
FDA status
- BPC-157 is not an FDA-approved drug. In 2023 FDA placed it in Category 2 of the bulk drug substances list, the significant-safety-concern category, which barred compounding pharmacies from preparing it; the nominations were later withdrawn, and FDA lists it as "nominated but withdrawn"1.
- It is not in Category 1 of FDA's 503A nominations list2.
- FDA's Federal Register notice of April 16, 2026 lists BPC-157 among substances to be considered for the 503A Bulks List, for ulcerative colitis3.
The July 2026 advisory committee
FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee met on July 23–24, 20264. FDA's briefing document for the meeting found a lack of evidence of effectiveness for BPC-1575, and the committee was asked to vote on whether to add it to the 503A Bulks List6. The committee voted 8 to 6, with one abstention, in favour of adding BPC-157, ABC News reported the same day; the vote is non-binding and needs FDA sign-off16. FDA's meeting record, as read on October 29, 2026, gives the voting questions but not the result.
HHS's October 2026 compounding notice
HHS filed a notice on October 28, 2026, published in the Federal Register on October 30 (91 FR 68526), announcing a draft, interim policy: it does not intend to take enforcement action against “a State-licensed pharmacy, Federal facility, or licensed physician compounding a drug product using a peptide bulk drug substance found in Appendix A” while the 503A Bulks List is developed through rulemaking. It calls the policy interim and not binding, and says HHS may revisit it if a safety signal or product quality issue arises18. Appendix A of the policy lists BPC-157 among six peptides, and Appendix B covers BPC-157 acetate in subcutaneous, intramuscular, oral and topical dosage forms19. HHS told ABC News that the policy does not grant FDA approval or establish clinical safety and effectiveness17.
How it is sold and prescribed
Research-grade BPC-157 is sold by specialty peptide vendors for research use only, not as a drug. Of the clinic pages read before the HHS notice, six say BPC-157 is not FDA-approved789101112, four say their product comes from compounding pharmacies7101112, and one says compounding under section 503A is still not authorised13.
Sport
The World Anti-Doping Agency's 2026 Prohibited List names BPC-157 under S0, non-approved substances, so it is banned in tested sport14. It was first added to the list in 202215.
Each of the seven peptides' committee votes, and what a vote does and does not change, are in the July 2026 vote report.
The routes and the ten conditions in HHS's draft enforcement-discretion policy are in the report on the HHS policy.
FDA's staff evaluation and the 2020 warning letter that names BPC-157 are set out in How BPC-157 is dosed.
